No More FaceBook, Replaced by Google+

Taking my own advice that I give to others to get rid of tools that you don’t use because they take your attention and time away from the ones you are and should be using, I finally got rid of my FaceBook account, yesterday.
You might wonder what took me so long. There’s no good excuse, really. I wanted to personally write to each person who had “friended” me to tell them I was shutting down the account and to make sure they had my contact information so we could stay in-touch (although, most of them had all that, anyway). So, one-by-one, I sent a note to each of them, “unfriended” them (feels kind of weird to do that to a person, which is why I wrote to them, first), then shut-down the account.
Back to a question customers often ask me, which is, “Do I have to FaceBook/LinkedIn/Twitter or will I totally miss-out on what’s going on in the world?” My answer is that you shouldn’t feel you “have to” do it. Find some way to get information and stay in-touch with people that works for you and them and stick with it. Well, stick with it until it doesn’t seem to be working, anymore. But if you’re using a tin can and a string, maybe you should review whether it’s really working for you. ;-)
Just by chance, yesterday, I got into a conversation with someone about Google+ and got an invitation to that. As all you readers probably know, I’m heavily into the on-line networking tools and am willing to try-out the major ones to see if they’d be useful to me. Anyway, my trial of FaceBook is over but I’m starting my trial of Google+. Since it’s still just in a trial version, don’t expect to hear a lot of solid news about it, either, as it still appears to be open to a small number of testers. For those of you who know what a really great tester I am (from the excellent programs I deliver to you, because my motto remains as such: “Users are not to be used for basic program testing because they’re busy people and programs should essentially be tested to the best of one’s ability when put into a user’s hands – the user should merely be testing to verify that no misunderstandings took place with regard to the way the programs work.”), you’ll know that this is right up my alley. I will beat the living daylights out of it until I’m satisfied I understand it and that it works.
