SmartLabs Exchange 2010 - Day 2

So, here we are already in the 2nd day of the SmartLabs Exchange in Brussels, Belgium. Yesterday, I mentioned that I’m, for the first time, the event Chair and it’s been a good opportunity to meet even more of the people at the exchange. However, I will admit that, even without being the conference chair or a speaker, the people running it do a great job of getting people together.
It’s hard to believe the first day is already done. I sat in on other tracks to listen to other speakers, spent time with the software vendors in the expo area, and generally hung-out with whomever was lurking about looking lonely and like they wanted desperately for someone to start a deep and intricate discussion on laboratory informatics with them. Of course, for those who know me quite well, you all know that anyone lurking about looks to me like they’re just DYING to have this kind of conversation. They look like they’re making themselves available for this kind of conversation. I suppose it could be that they’re just trying to grab a cup of coffee or a snack...but, no, I’m sure they really do want to start-up a long-winded discussion with me. ;-)
It seems that we might get yet another acronym for our industry: ELP (Enterprises Laboratory Platform) -- a kind of software to bridge the laboratory enterprise. Overall, I just feel grumpy about getting yet another acronym in our current sea of acronyms -- some of which are losing their meaning, others which never truly had a solid meaning.
By the way, one of the software vendors showed the YouTube video from my "tough customers" blog post because that customer is at SmartLabs, and quite a lot of people enjoyed watching it and ask that company about the whole experience. It was cool having them around during the showing of the video -- they're kind of minor celebrities, now.
